Notes for William Martindale
From ÒLt. James Martindell, Partisan Soldier of the RevolutionÓ by W.C. Hudson

ÒWilliam Martindale and Martha joined a Quaker emigration from Pennsylvania to South Carolina about 1762...(they) settled on the Enoree River in Union County where his five sons and three daughters grew up and married. This part of the state was comparatively inactive as a theater of war until after the fall of Charleston in the Spring of 1780, partly because many of its inhabitants were Quakers and were peacably inclined, and partly because of its remore location, far from the centers of population. However, when General Tarleton was sent to subdue Upper South Carolina it became the scene of some of the fiercest and most brutal fighting of the whole war.Ó

----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------**From Carl Fairfield:
John, son of Wm, did not accompany the family from Loudoun Co., VA to SC until 1784 after his discharge in the Rev. War. Listed in census of 1775-78 for MD as living in Charles Co., MD. Served as fifer and drummer in First MD Regt, Continental under Washington. A John Martindale who served eraly in that war in Mass. may be the same John. Washington went to Mass. to take command of the Continental Army at Boston. There was previous association between the Martindales and Washington's great grandfather.

----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------From: (see sep. Chapter) The History of the Old South Carolina Martindale Family.

We have no records to establish the genealogy back of him. He was born in PHL but the day is not known. . . . (1) identified as the oldest son of John and Mary Bridgeman who was born Oct. 2, 1707 and according to "History of Byberry and Moreland," went to S.C. (2) or son of the William and grandson of John, the cordwainer in PHL. (3) or son of a James who came from England, settled in PHL . . . The last supposition accords with the number of generations of the family in America. . .
This family migrated to S.C. from Pa. (probably Bucks Co), about 1770. He did not obtain a Colonial grant, but secured 150 acres from David Dinsmore prior to 1791. The records show that in May 1791, his house burned and all papers and house contents were destroyed. It seems likely that all eight of his children were born in Pa. and married in S.C.

His first wife died. About 1789/90 he married Elizabeth who was evidently much younger. In Sept. 1796, they sold 150 acres to a David Norman who may have been his son-in-law. They must have continued to live on the place until after 1800, when William would have been well onto 70.
The location of the settlement was part of the old District of Ninety-Six, what is now Cross Keys Township, Union County, S.C. During 1774 to 1789 land grants were surveyed for William and his son, including James. They acquired about 1323 acres.

. . . No record what became of William or second wife. A careful search has failed to reveal a single grave of a Martindale in all the Cross Keys neighborhood. Many of the oldest graves are either unmarked or marked with native stones which hve partially crumbled away . . .

. . . In the Court records of Union Conty we found no references to any will or administrations of estates of any of the Martindales. The deed records of the county do not index any transfers of propery afthe year 1800. . . . some carelessness in not recording the deeds.
