| Notes for John Martindale | ||||||||||||||||||||
| From JOHN MARTINDELL (or MARTINDALE) CORDWAINER, of PHILADELPHIA and SOME OF HIS DESCENDANTS, Compiled from Material Collected by REV. HARRY H. MARTINDALE. 1953. JOHN MARTINDELL, b. 24 Oct. 1676 in England, came to America in 1684; settled in Newton, Bucks county, Pa., before 1700; m. in 1705 Mary Bridgman, daughter of Walter and Blanche (Constable) Bridgman who were m. 26 June 1686 (OS) at Middletown, Bucks county, having come to America on the same ship in 1682, Blanche in company of her brother Thomas Constable. The Constables were from Cornwall, England. Mary Bridgman was b. 1687. John Martindell was a cordwainer (shoemaker) and the family lived in Philadelphia. Mary inherited land in Bucks county originally entered by her father. (See patent from William Penn to John and Mary Martindell, Patent Book A, vol. iv, p. 142, Dept. of Internal Affairs of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, Pa.) She d. 7 Dec. 1726. John Martindell d. 5 Oct. 1750. They were members of the Society of Friends. Mary BridgmanÕs bible, presented in her 18th year, is in the library of the Bucks County Historical Society, Doyleston, Pa., and contains some records of her children. Other information for the following list was taken from Reference 1. Children: William, b. 2 Oct. 1707; d. 19 Oct. 1707. Thomas, b. 24 Sept. 1708. Ann, b. 16 Nov. 1709; d. 10 June 1714. Mary b. 22 Dec. 1711. Alabrethe, b. 6 July 1715. 2 John, b. 22 June 1719. 3 William, b. 30 Aug. 1723. Records of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (Society of Friends) contain dates of deaths of children of John and Mary Martindell of which only one, Ann, can be identified with names in the list above. Other names in these records are William, Hannah and Elizabeth, dying in 1706, 1718 and 1716 respectively. Those records are found on pp. 289, 299, 429, 435 and 436. Regarding the inclusion of the second William in the list of children of John and Mary Martindell, Rev. Harry H. Martindale wrote: ÒI have found few documentary records of William Martindale, son of John Martindell, cordwainer, of Philadelphia. Elder Elijah Martindale must have known him personally as he lived in the same locality in South Carolina as a boy and was about 15 years of age when William Martindale died in 1808. Elder Elijah states that William was born in Philadelphia and the bible record of Mary Bridgman Martindell indicates that she and her husband, John Martindell, had a son who was born 30 Aug. 1723. That was three years before MaryÕs death. I cannot claim as a certainty that this child was William Martindale, recorded as No. 3 in this record, but it is a very likely supposition. Dr. Joseph C. Martindale refers in his History of Byberry and Moreland Townships to such a son having gone to South Carolina.Ó It seems to have been a fairly common practice 200 years ago, when a child died in infancy, to give his name to another child born afterward. See the case of the two sons, both named George, of Thomas Martindale, No. 19, herein. There is no proof for the statement made by some later members of the family that William Martindale was born in England. ---------------------------------------------------- From ÒLt. James Martindell, a Partisan Soldier of the RevolutionÓ by William Clarence Hudson John Martindell, father of William, and first of the family to come to America, was a Quaker who came from the North of England to Pennsylvania prior to 1700. The family was known in Lincolnshire and thereabout for nearly three hundred years and probably originated with some rural ÔMartinÕ who lived in a ÔdellÕ or secluded valley and was known as Martin of the Dell to distinguish him from others in the vicinity bearing the name Martin. ---------------------------------------------------- Get: Holmes, C. 1980.
