| http://www.parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/sreuther/d14552.htm Hugh HUGHES was born about 1715 in Chester Co., PA. He died in 1763 in Hampshire Co., VA. Married Susannah or Susan? About 1750, Hugh Hughes took his family and went with his father and others, north westward toward the Fairfax land of Frederick Co., present day Hampshire Co., WV. There he acquired a tract of 480 acres on the Great Cacapon River, adjoining that of his brother, Thomas, in what is now Hampshire Co., WV. Hampshire Co records show that "Susannah Hughes (widow) and William Hughes, eldest son of Hugh Hughes of Hampshire Co., sold 33 acres on Cape Capon Creek, to Benjamin Fry on May 10, 1763." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For the fact that Hugh Hughes was a child of William Parson Hughes and Mary Withers, I have relied on several family historians, notably Garry McLaughlin (www.gbso.net/~actor/actor.htm), Jacoby Hughes, and Susan Wedig (http://www.strato.net/~wedigs/genealogy.html). -------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent: Friday, April 07, 2000 1:33 PM To: Hughes, James Subject: Re: Thomas Hughes, 1717 Dear James, Three grandsons of William Hughes, who d. Hampshire Co., VA 1767,(sons of Thomas Hughes who was killed by Indians 1778) were backwoodsmen, illiterate and as savage as the Indians they killed. These brothers were Jesse, Elias and Thomas Jr. Elias is ancestor of my husband. However, Hugh Hughes (son of William & brother of the Thomas who was killed by Indians 1778) made a will and requested that his sons Evan and Jonathan be put to a trade. Jonathan was b. 1753, was a Rev. War soldier and his life is well chronicled by Eben Putnam in his "Lt. Joshua Hews, A New England Pioneer, and Some of His Descendants, with Materials for a Genealogical History of Other Families of the Name, and a Sketch of Joseph Hewes The Signer," pp. 478-9, privately published 1913. Jonathan is also in "West Virginians in the American Revolution, p. 140, by Ross B. Johnston, Gen. Publ. Co., Baltimore, 1977. Jonathan became a teacher. In any event, I don't think this Hampshire Co. bunch were Quakers. I do not have any information before William Hughes who d. 1767. Parsons is not a name that is repeated in the descendants of William Hughes (wife unknown) who had children Hugh, Thomas, William, Evan, Mary Anderson, Sudrah Carpenter, Sarah Baker, Ellis, all mentioned in his will dated 30 Dec 1762, proved 9 Jun 1767. Executors: son Ellis Hughes and John Waite. Securities: James Alexander and William Wilson. Witnesses: Joseph Howe, James Alexander, Henry Frey. An abstract of his will is in Early Records, Hampshire Co., Va., Now W. Va., p. 120, by Clara McCormack Sage and Laura Sage Jones, Gen. Publ. Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1976. A more complete version is in Hacker's Creek Journal 2:194. Wife of Hugh (son of William) was Susanna, who was mentioned in his will dated Hampshire Co., Va., 9 Jan 1762, proved 10 May 1763. Abstract in Sage & Jones, p. 120. Susanna Hughes made her will dated Hampshire Co, VA., 8 Mar 1784, proved Hardy Co Court 11 Apr 1791. Susanna's will is in Hacker's Creek Journal 3:34. Hugh & Susanna had William, James, Hugh, Evan, Jonathan, Mary, Hannah. 1st wife of Thomas (son of William) said to have been Mary Baker. By 12 Feb 1759 his wife was Susanna who is mentioned in a deed from Thomas to Henry Fry. So Susanna, widow of Hugh, did not marry Thomas. Children of Thomas by two wives were (order uncertain) Sudna, Deborah, Sarah, Jesse, Thomas, Elias, James, Martha, Charles, Job, ?Ann, Edward. Wife of William Jr. was Widow Mary Swallow, said to have had eight children. Husband of Sudna/Sudrah (dau. of William) said to have been Solomon Carpenter. John Carpenter jcarp45@top.monad.net can help you here. Richard Scribner Rmscribner@aol.com has been researching Hughes of Chester Co., Pa. Perhaps he can help you with that line. Regards, Patty Myers ------------------------------------ Excerpts of the will of William Hughes dated Dec 31, 1762 and probated June 9, 1767 -- "This thirtifirst Day of December A.D. 1762 - I William Hughes of the County of Hampshire Colloney of Virginia ... and dispose of the same in the following manner and form -- Item I give unto my son Hugh Hughes one shilling sterling.
